Volvo S60, S80, V70, XC70, XC90 2000-2004 CEM repair and synchronization with motor ECU utility.

The way immobilizer works on Volvo S60, S80, V70, XC70, XC90 2000-2004 :
Immobilizer data (immo) on these cars is stored in the Central electric module (CEM) located in driver compartment fuse box. CEM receives transponder key signal from immobilizer coil and if key data is equal to car, sends synchronization signal to motor ECU. If transponder key is stored in CEM and synchronization data CEM-ECU is correct, CEM permits to start the engine.

The way this program is used:

– car doesn’t start, no starter, ignition ON/OFF is ok:
most common problem on these cars is CEM loose all keys and synchronization with motor ECU after battery discharge. In motor ECU fault code “No communication with immobilizer”, “key is not valid” is active and car doesn’t start. For repair remove CEM from car, read 28F400 memory with programmer (for ex. ELNEC BEEPROG or other). Remove and open motor ECU and read internal EEPROM memory with CarProg (depending from ECU 93C56, 24C04 or 95P08: in the most cases there is no need to desolder – use A6 adapter). Now open with program CEM
and motor ECU files. If CEM immobilizer data is lost you will see “000000” in all lines – in this case push “RESTORE CEM DATA”. After synchronize CEM with motor ECU by transferring synchro bytes to ECU memory. Now save both files. Motor ECU memory you can write back to EEPROM and install ECU back to the car. To CEM repaired file you must also write transponder keys. Use CarProg VOLVO KEY software and program new keys (you will need to change transponders inside the keys – old transponders cannot be used). After keys
programming you can write last 28F400 file to chip, solder this chip to CEM and install CEM back to the car.

– replace motor ECU:
For repair remove CEM from car, read 28F400 memory with programmer (for ex. ELNEC BEEPROG or other). Remove and open motor ECU and read internal EEPROM memory with CarProg (depending from ECU 93C56, 24C04 or 95P08: in the most cases there is no need to desolder –
use A6 adapter). Now open with program CEM and motor ECU files. In CEM immobilizer data you will see keys data, synchronization bytes. Now synchronize CEM with motor ECU by transferring synchro bytes to ECU memory. Now save both files. Motor ECU memory you can write back to EEPROM and install ECU back to the car. Solder original 28F400 (without program modifications) chip to CEM and install CEM back
to the car. Now car will start.
